How to Check Word Count on Google Docs

It is always a good idea to keep track of your word count while writing. You may notice that by default, Google Docs does not display the word count on the screen. I will show you how to check the word count in Google Docs on both desktop and mobile. I will also show you how to keep the word count displayed on the screen while you type.

Check the Word Count on Desktop

To check the word count on a desktop computer, click “Tools” in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then click “Word Count” in the drop-down menu.

You will then see a pop-up appear showing you the current word count and character count of the document. If you want to keep the word count on the screen while you type, select the “Display word count while typing” checkbox, then click “OK.”

Now, as you work on your document, the word count will be conveniently displayed at the bottom-left corner of your screen. This real-time feedback ensures you stay on track with your writing goals.

Check the Word Count on Mobile (Android and iOS)

It is also possible to check the word count using the Google Docs mobile app for Android and iOS. First, open the document you want to edit, then tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the app.

Next, tap “Word count” in the menu that appears.

The word count will now be displayed. Tap outside of the pop-up box to return to your document.
